FC Schalke 04 defends club identity against external investors
FC Schalke 04 continues to defend its identity and organizational structure against interest from various external investors. Financial Director Christina Rühl-Hamers stated that the club regularly receives inquiries from questionable investors, including those claiming to be from the Anglo-Saxon region or Middle Eastern sheikhdoms. She noted that many of these inquiries prove to be unsubstantiated.
Rühl-Hamers emphasized the club's commitment to the German '50+1' rule, which ensures that club members retain majority voting rights and prevents corporations from gaining total control. She described the rule as the 'core of German football,' citing the importance of fan culture and the close relationship between the club and its supporters.
The club's identity is deeply rooted in its history as a working-class institution. Founded in 1904 in Gelsenkirchen, Schalke 04 emerged from the local mining community of the Ruhr region. This heritage is still reflected in the club's culture and the naming of its youth academy, the 'Knappenschmiede'.
