FC Schalke 04's management: new scouting director Maximilian Lüftl outlines transfer strategy

FC Schalke 04 has promoted 31‑year‑old Maximilian Lüftl to director of scouting and transfers. In an interview he explained that his duties combine extensive travel across Europe – including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, England, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic – with office‑based strategic work. He said transfer negotiations are handled as a team effort alongside sport director Frank Baumann, director of professional football Youri Mulder and the scouting staff, and that decisions are not the sole responsibility of any single individual.

The club also reflected on the legacy of former coach and manager Felix Magath, who held a triple role of head coach, manager and board member from 2009 to 2011. Magath imposed an extremely demanding training regime, sought to give himself unrestricted transfer authority, and created a high‑pressure environment that led some staff to seek therapy. He left Schalke with a reported €2 million severance package after guiding the team to a league runner‑up finish and a DFB‑Pokal win.
