FC Thun narrowly avoids cup upset against third-division Schaffhausen

Swiss top-flight club FC Thun narrowly avoided a major upset in the Swiss Cup round of 16, advancing past third-division side Schaffhausen only after a dramatic penalty shootout. The match ended 2-2 after 120 minutes of play.

Schaffhausen took the lead in the 49th minute through Carmine Chiappetta. Thun equalized in the 72nd minute via a Furkan Dursun penalty. After the match moved into extra time, Riccardo Braschi scored a penalty for Thun, but Dimitri Volkart equalized for Schaffhausen in the final moments of the second extra period following a rebound from a Niklas Spycher save.

Thun eventually secured their progression with an 8-7 victory in the penalty shootout. This narrow escape follows a period of poor form for the Swiss champions, who have suffered five defeats in their last six matches across all competitions, including a recent loss to Twente in the Conference League.
