FC Utrecht vs Go Ahead Eagles match abandoned due to fan disruptions
An Eredivisie match between FC Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles at Stadion Galgenwaard was abandoned on Saturday following repeated disruptions by supporters. The match was initially interrupted when fireworks were launched into the pitch from the home supporters' section, causing a temporary suspension.
After play resumed, Go Ahead Eagles maintained a 3-1 lead. However, during the subsequent goal celebration by Utrecht, spectators threw cups and other objects onto the field, prompting referee Martin van den Kerkhof to permanently halt the fixture.
The KNVB and local authorities have decided that the remaining 26 minutes of the match will be played this Tuesday, September 8, at 14:00, but the game will be held behind closed doors without spectators.
