FCA reports nearly 881,000 borrowers secured early mortgage deals in H1 2026

Data from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) reveals that approximately 880,635 mortgage borrowers secured new deals up to six months before their current maturities during the first half of 2026. This figure includes 499,271 mortgages in the first quarter and 381,364 in the second quarter.

Affordability pressures continue to influence borrower behavior, with roughly 354,000 mortgages seeing monthly payment reductions between July 2023 and June 2026 through temporary switches to interest-only payments or term extensions. In the second quarter of 2026, approximately 22,400 mortgages utilized these options, an increase from 20,100 in the first quarter.

The value of outstanding residential mortgage loans rose by 0.8% from the previous quarter to £1.76 trillion, representing a 3.1% increase year-over-year. Gross mortgage advances also saw growth, increasing 11.1% from the previous quarter to £77.4 billion.
