FCC approves 160 MHz Upper C‑Band auction for 5G and 6G

The Federal Communications Commission voted on July 22 to auction 160 MHz of upper C‑band spectrum (3.98‑4.14 GHz) for deployment of 5G and future 6G networks, with the auction slated to conclude by 2027. Combined with the previously auctioned 280 MHz of lower C‑band (3.7‑3.98 GHz), the plan creates a contiguous 440 MHz “super‑band” intended to boost capacity and reduce equipment costs for mobile operators.

The order also clears additional C‑band frequencies for satellite operators, requiring incumbents such as SES and Eutelsat to relocate to the remaining 40 MHz of upper C‑band or other bands. It includes a broader licensing overhaul to accelerate the commercial space economy, coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration to protect aircraft radio altimeters, and rebates for domestic aircraft owners. Commissioner Anna Gómez dissented, noting the decision did not give tribal nations an opportunity to acquire spectrum before the broader auction.
