US FCC Approves Reflect Orbital Space-Mirror Satellite

The Federal Communications Commission has authorized Reflect Orbital to launch a demonstration satellite, Eärendil‑1, into low‑Earth orbit. The satellite carries a thin‑film reflector roughly 18 metres on a side that can be steered to bounce sunlight onto specific ground targets, creating a light patch about five kilometres wide for a few minutes at a time. The company says the technology could extend daylight for solar farms, aid search‑and‑rescue teams, illuminate construction sites, and later support agricultural or military operations. Reflect Orbital plans to test the concept this year and eventually deploy up to 50,000 similar mirrors by 2035.

Scientists and astronomers have voiced strong opposition, warning that the mirrors could increase light pollution, interfere with telescope observations, risk temporary flash blindness for pilots or drivers, and disrupt wildlife and human circadian rhythms. Samantha Lawler, an astronomer, called the idea “terrifying… a country can change the night sky for everyone.” The American Astronomical Society also submitted an objection. The FCC noted that such environmental and safety concerns fall outside its regulatory remit, which is limited to radio‑frequency spectrum use.
