FCC bans certain foreign-made robot vacuums

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced restrictions on a category of products labeled “advanced robotic devices,” a designation that includes foreign-made robot vacuums and robot lawn mowers. Under the new policy, all foreign-made robotic devices that lack existing FCC clearance are banned in the United States.

The ban specifically targets devices that meet several criteria: a combined weight (including the base station) exceeding 4.4 pounds, the presence of sensors capable of perceiving the environment, network connectivity components, and software for autonomous movement. Because many top-selling robot vacuums feature self-emptying capabilities, they often exceed the weight threshold.

Existing models that have already received FCC authorization are not affected, and current owners can continue to use their devices. While the policy could face legal challenges or further restrictions, the immediate impact on consumers is expected to be delayed for several months to a year.
