FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez urges broadcasters to resist administration pressure

Anna Gomez, the sole Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has called on the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) to take a more aggressive stance against what she describes as a coordinated effort by the Trump administration to reshape the media.

Gomez expressed concern regarding actions by FCC Chair Brendan Carr, specifically his warnings that broadcast networks could violate regulatory obligations by airing “entirely fake polls” prior to the November 3 election. Gomez characterized these efforts as an attempt to pressure networks into avoiding polls that the administration dislikes.

In April, Carr ordered an unprecedented early license review for all eight of Disney’s company-owned ABC TV stations. NAB President Curtis LeGeyt responded to Gomez’s remarks by stating the group would continue working with policymakers to protect broadcasters’ rights and expressed appreciation for her commitment to First Amendment principles.
