US FCC bans foreign-made humanoid robots and power inverters
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added foreign‑produced advanced robotic devices and foreign‑produced power inverters to its Covered List, prohibiting the import, marketing or sale of new models in the United States. The ban covers humanoid, quadruped and other mobile robots that weigh more than 4.4 lb, contain sensors and wireless connectivity, and can operate autonomously, as well as inverters that convert DC to AC for the electric grid. It is based on a national‑security determination by a White House‑convened interagency body, citing cyber‑risk and supply‑chain vulnerabilities that could threaten critical infrastructure. Existing robot vacuums and other devices already approved for sale are exempt. The action primarily targets Chinese manufacturers, which account for roughly 90 % of global shipments of such robots. The United States announced the rule on 28 July 2026, and Chinese officials have signaled possible retaliatory measures.
