FCC leads aggressive U.S. technology restrictions against China

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has become a central driver of the Trump administration’s strategy to restrict Chinese technology in U.S. supply chains. Led by Brendan Carr, the agency has implemented bans on various Chinese imports, including drones, routers, inverters, and robots. The FCC is also moving to block Chinese laboratories from testing electronic devices like smartphones and computers for the U.S. market and is drafting a ban on Chinese data center components to protect AI-related infrastructure.

In response to these measures and other U.S. trade actions, China has announced tightened export controls on technology and drones destined for the United States, as well as sanctions against a U.S. testing and certification firm. While President Trump is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping in September to discuss bilateral relations, national security experts suggest that the U.S. technological crackdown is likely to persist.
