FCC Moves to Relax Radio and TV Ownership Caps
The Federal Communications Commission is considering major changes to broadcast ownership limits. Broadcasters Connoisseur Media and Beasley Media Group have filed ex‑parte requests urging the agency to repeal or substantially revise the Local Radio Ownership Rule, citing steep declines in radio’s share of local advertising and listening time. Meetings between company executives and FCC officials were held on July 15 and July 16, including discussions with Acting Chief Alexander Sanje and Commissioner Olivia Trusty.
Separately, industry commentary notes that the FCC appears poised to vote on repealing the 39 % national television station ownership cap, a rule that has restricted consolidation among TV broadcasters. The potential rule change, announced by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, could allow unlimited ownership of TV stations, while the collapse of regional sports networks creates an opportunity for broadcasters to secure local sports content.
Both pieces highlight the broadcasters’ push for scale and the FCC’s pending decision that could reshape ownership structures across radio and television in the United States.
