FCC review threatens future of school broadband E-Rate program

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched a comprehensive evaluation of the E-Rate program, a 30-year-old federal initiative that provides broadband service discounts to schools. More than 96,000 districts nationwide utilize the program, with high-poverty districts saving up to 90% on connectivity costs.

The review is considering whether the program should be reformed, restricted to rural areas, or abandoned entirely on the grounds that it has fulfilled its original mission. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated the proposal aims to empower parents and ensure educational outcomes, noting that technological advancements necessitate ‘right-sizing’ federal broadband initiatives.

School administrators, such as Kelly May-Vollmer of Desert Sands Unified, highlight the program's critical role in modern school operations, including bus tracking, cafeteria management, and grounds maintenance. The review process has prompted concerns among educational technology leaders, with comments due by October 13 and replies due by November 12.
