FCC reviews federal school internet subsidies

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is conducting a wide-ranging review of the E-Rate program, a nearly 30-year-old initiative that provides approximately $3 billion annually to cover 20% to 90% of school internet expenses.

Influenced by advocacy from Arielle Roth, a telecommunications policy adviser within the Commerce Department, the review responds to growing concerns regarding student screen time and the impact of technology in classrooms. FCC Chair Brendan Carr indicated the review will evaluate whether the program has served its purpose and if updates are necessary to protect children online.

Proposed changes could include the elimination of subsidies or new requirements for schools to restrict screen time or allow parental opt-outs to remain eligible for funding. Education advocates and district leaders warn that such shifts could be financially devastating and disruptive to school operations, especially as the White House simultaneously promotes the use of AI in education.
