FCC wireless infrastructure proposal sparks debate over health standards

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is pursuing a proposal titled ‘Build America: Eliminating Barriers to Wireless Deployments’ to accelerate the construction and upgrading of wireless infrastructure. Led by Chairman Brendan Carr, the initiative aims to reduce state and local permitting delays, fees, and restrictions to expand broadband availability and support emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has expressed support for the plan, stating that predictable permitting rules will encourage private investment and improve network resiliency. Final regulatory action on the proposal is currently targeted for later in 2026.

However, the push has reignited debates regarding radiofrequency (RF) exposure standards. Health advocates, including representatives from Environmental Health Sciences, argue that current federal regulations are outdated and do not adequately account for biological effects. Critics contend that the U.S. allows radiation levels significantly higher than those in many other countries and have called for a comprehensive review of the science regarding potential impacts such as genetic damage and other health concerns.
