FCCPC calls for journalist training on competition and consumer rights

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called for enhanced capacity building and training for journalists specializing in competition and consumer protection. During a meeting with the executive members of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) in Abuja, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Tunji Bello noted that competition reporting is a relatively new field within the Nigerian jurisdiction.

Bello, represented by Executive Commissioner for Operations Louis Odion, stated that the commission is considering requests for training programs to help journalists better understand the nuances of competition law and consumer rights. He emphasized that media coverage has been instrumental in raising the public profile of the FCCPC, which was previously not widely known by the Nigerian public.

In addition to media engagement, the commission has also focused on educating the judiciary. The FCCPC recently supported a training program through the National Judicial Institute to provide judges with expert knowledge on competition-related matters, addressing the complexities of this emerging legal terrain.
