Füchse Berlin draws strong group at IHF Club World Championship amid modest budget

German handball club Füchse Berlin has been placed in Group B of the IHF Club World Championship. The group includes Egyptian side Al Ahly, Kuwait’s Burgan SC and the winner of the qualifier between Sydney Uni and Hungarian powerhouse Veszprém, with the latter expected to join the group. The draw gives Füchse a challenging path to the final.

Club director Bob Hanning says the team’s budget sits in the upper third of the German Bundesliga but remains below the league’s top clubs. Füchse therefore relies heavily on talent development, using a small staff and volunteer work to maximise resources. Players such as Mathias Gidsel, Simon Pytlick and Dika Mem require substantial investment, so the club focuses on promoting its own youth prospects to stay competitive internationally.
