FCS football outlook focuses on defensive rankings and Idaho Vandals rebuilding
As the 2026 FCS football season approaches, analysis of previous defensive performances and upcoming team outlooks highlights the landscape of the division. In the Big Sky Conference, Montana State boasted the top defense last season, allowing 4.6 yards per play. Other notable defensive performers included UC Davis, Southern Utah, Montana, Idaho, and Eastern Washington.
Looking ahead to the 2026 campaign, the Idaho Vandals are expected to undergo a period of improvement under head coach Thomas Ford Jr. Following a 4-8 record in the previous season, Ford has implemented a new coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker and defensive coordinator Lee Stalker. While expectations for a return to the FCS playoffs may be tempered, the team is projected to see growth as they prepare to face Cal Poly.
In the CAA conference, Rhode Island led the division with the best defense, allowing 4.7 yards per play, followed by Maine, Monmouth, Towson, and UAlbany.
