FCTA launches free hydrocele surgeries in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a program to provide free hydrocele surgeries for residents across the six Area Councils in Abuja. The initiative aims to provide surgical care to individuals who cannot afford the cost of treatment.

Dr. Teresa Nwachukwu, Director of the FCT Public Health Department, noted that while hydrocele is medically treatable, the condition can negatively impact mobility, productivity, and social participation. The program is supported by several partners, including IHS Towers, The END Fund, Christian Blind Mission (CBM), and the HANDS Division.

Lami Ndayako, the FCT Coordinator for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), highlighted that IHS Towers has invested approximately ₦114 million into NTD elimination efforts in the territory over the last three years. This support has bolstered interventions for lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, including the distribution of over 400,000 doses of ivermectin.
