FDA approves first generic weekly hormone therapy patch
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of Climara Pro, a weekly transdermal estradiol and levonorgestrel patch. Produced by Zydus Pharmaceuticals (USA) Inc, the generic system is therapeutically equivalent to the Bayer reference product.
The patch is indicated for women with an intact uterus to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS) associated with menopause and to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Unlike common estrogen-only patches, this combined estrogen-progestogen system includes a progestogen to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.
Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas noted that the approval aims to increase access to affordable medical products. Dr. Michael Davis, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, highlighted that the once-weekly administration offers a convenient alternative to daily oral medications, potentially improving patient adherence to treatment.
