FDA authorizes four new Altria nicotine pouch products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved four new nicotine pouch products from Altria’s subsidiary Helix Innovations LLC under its tobacco‑product pilot program. The authorized On Plus pouches – Rich Berry, Autumn Spice (2 mg) and Cappuccino (2 mg and 4 mg) – were found to contain lower levels of most harmful and potentially harmful constituents than other oral and smokeless tobacco products.

The FDA said its review considered the risks and benefits to the U.S. population, including potential benefits for adult smokers who switch to a lower‑risk product and the risks to youth and non‑users. To date the agency has authorized 30 nicotine pouch products.

Separately, the FDA also cleared marketing claims for Zyn, a leading nicotine‑pouch brand owned by Philip Morris International, stating that using Zyn instead of cigarettes reduces the risk of several serious diseases. Public‑health experts note the products are less harmful than smoked tobacco but remain addictive and may serve as a gateway for younger users.
