FDA Bimectin ivermectin New World screwworm cattle industry

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Bimectin (ivermectin) injection to prevent New World screwworm (NWS) infestations in cattle. Bimectin is a generic version of Ivomec, which was previously authorized in February 2026.

The authorization allows the drug to be administered within 24 hours of birth, during castration, or upon the appearance of a wound. However, the FDA has specified that the injection is not authorized for use in lactating dairy cows or in calves intended for veal production. To ensure food safety and prevent drug residues, producers must adhere to a 35-day slaughter withdrawal period.

The application for Bimectin was submitted by Bimeda Animal Health, a company based in Ireland. FDA officials stated that the authorization aims to expand generic drug options, ensuring cattle producers are not dependent on a single manufacturer to protect their herds from the parasite.
