FDA food recalls exceed 480 in current fiscal year

The United States has seen more than 480 food recalls announced during the current federal fiscal year, a figure that exceeds the totals of four of the previous five fiscal years, according to FDA data.

Recent major recalls include Gias Foods' Bettergoods Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, and Evergreen Fresh Broccoli Sprouts due to possible Salmonella contamination. Additionally, Danone USA recalled So Delicious Dairy Free Salted Caramel Cluster Non-Dairy Frozen Desserts following reports of potential foreign material, such as stones, in the product.

These recalls coincide with significant shifts in the federal food safety system. FDA employment decreased by approximately 22% between 2024 and 2026, and inspections of foreign food facilities have fallen nearly 35% since 2019. While the FDA maintains that workforce reductions have not impacted frontline inspectors, food safety experts have expressed concern regarding reduced oversight amid rising food imports.
