FDA holds public hearing on future therapeutic use of psychedelics

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently held a public hearing regarding the potential future therapeutic use of psychedelic drugs. The session included nearly 80 speakers, including researchers, clinicians, advocates, and business owners, who provided testimony on the substances' potential applications.

Rather than debating the fundamental therapeutic potential of psychedelics, the discussion focused on the logistics of responsible access. Key topics included patient safeguards, provider qualifications, quality assurance, data standardization, and equitable access. Testimony from participants was described as overwhelmingly positive, with speakers emphasizing the need for safe and responsible implementation.

This hearing follows recent federal momentum, including Executive Order 14401, which directed agencies to accelerate psychedelic research and drug approvals, and the FDA's first guidance on psychedelic drug clinical investigations. The agency is currently accepting public comments on these matters through October 5, 2026.
