FDA to classify peptide drugs, boosting Novo Nordisk, pressuring Hims & Hers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is preparing to formally recognize peptide compounds as a distinct drug class. Regulatory endorsement would separate clinically validated peptide medicines, such as insulin and GLP‑1 therapies, from the rapidly expanding, loosely regulated wellness market that sells peptides for athletic performance, skin care, cognitive aid and even romantic enhancement.

Wall Street reacted to the news: Hims & Hers Health fell about 2 % as investors weigh uncertainty for its peptide‑based consumer products, while Novo Nordisk, a leading developer of peptide therapeutics, rose roughly 3 % on expectations of clearer regulatory pathways for its GLP‑1 and other pipeline drugs. A startup, Feel Peptides, is highlighted for marketing peptide formulations aimed at improving romantic connection, illustrating the breadth of products that could be affected.

Medical experts caution that many over‑the‑counter peptide supplements lack rigorous testing and safety data. An investigational oral peptide, enlicitide, showed strong cholesterol‑lowering results and may receive FDA approval as early as this fall, underscoring the distinction between approved pharmaceuticals and unregulated wellness products.
