FDA extends mifepristone safety review timeline to March 2027

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a court filing that its safety review of mifepristone, the most common abortion pill in the United States, will continue into next year. The reevaluation was ordered by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The FDA expects to complete a safety study by mid-December 2026. However, a final report on the findings is not expected until no later than March 2027. Following the report, the agency will determine whether to implement new restrictions or other changes to the drug's use, such as reinstating requirements for in-person dispensing.

The update was provided as part of a legal proceeding in a lawsuit brought by the state of Louisiana. The state alleges that the current rules allowing mifepristone to be delivered via mail undermine its abortion ban. Anti-abortion groups, including Americans United for Life, have criticized the extended timeline, calling it a lack of leadership from the administration.
