FDA warns of chemical plantain ripening at Madina Market

The Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning following investigations into the use of chemicals to accelerate plantain ripening at Madina Market. The investigation, conducted alongside the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, was prompted by a viral social media video.

Authorities identified the product being used as Ethemax, which contains ethephon 480 g/L SL as its active ingredient. While labeled as a plant growth regulator, the product carries a ‘Harmful’ hazard warning. The FDA expressed concern regarding the unauthorized or inappropriate application of agricultural chemicals, noting that using incorrect concentrations or applying products to unauthorized commodities can lead to unacceptable chemical residues on food.

The FDA has engaged the trader involved in the sale and distribution of the product and is taking regulatory action against those engaged in unauthorized use. Consumers are advised to purchase from trusted sources and wash fresh produce thoroughly before consumption.
