FDP holds party convention to seek political restart

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) is holding a digital federal party convention in Berlin to address a deep political crisis following significant electoral losses. Party Chairman Wolfgang Kubicki is advocating for a focus on economic growth to secure a comeback, particularly ahead of five critical state elections scheduled for 2027.

Kubicki warned that Germany is currently losing 15,000 industrial jobs per month across sectors such as automotive, chemical, and mechanical engineering. He cautioned that economic weakness could lead voters to doubt the ability of democracy to protect their interests.

The party is currently undergoing reform efforts, including proposals for a dual leadership structure, increased transparency in candidate selection, and better support for local functionaries. This follows the party's failure to meet the five percent threshold in the February 2025 federal election, which resulted in the party losing its representation in the Bundestag and the subsequent resignation of the party leadership.
