FDP leader Wolfgang Kubicki frames Berlin attack as Islamist threat amid party’s electoral resurgence

Wolfgang Kubicki, chairman of Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP), said the recent attack in Berlin – which left one dead and several injured during a Christopher Street Day event – was motivated by Islamism. He warned that Islamist terrorism continues to target LGBTQ+ gatherings, citing prior attacks in Orlando (2016) and Dresden (2020).

Kubicki also highlighted the FDP’s renewed momentum under his leadership, noting a rise in poll support to between four and five‑and‑a‑half percent and better prospects in the upcoming Saxony‑Anhalt state election. He argued that the party must move beyond minor electoral thresholds to shape Germany’s evolving political landscape, which he described as undergoing a “tectonic shift” with traditional parties losing ground.
