FDP proposes automatic tax adjustments to combat cold progression

A majority of German citizens support an automatic and permanent reduction of 'cold progression' in tax law, according to a Civey survey commissioned by the FDP. The survey, conducted between August 12 and 14 among 5,000 adults, found that 62 percent of respondents view the proposal positively, while 18 percent view it negatively.

Cold progression occurs when inflation-driven wage increases push taxpayers into higher tax brackets without increasing their real purchasing power. To combat this, the FDP proposes a mechanism that would legally and automatically link tax brackets and allowances to inflation rates.

FDP General Secretary Martin Hagen criticized the current tax system as a 'growth brake' and noted that the Federal Ministry of Finance's current income tax reform draft does not include a mechanism to offset these effects. The FDP has previously proposed a four-stage tax tariff consisting of 15, 25, 35, and 42 percent rates to increase transparency and reduce the tax burden.
