Febrasgo highlights mental health needs after gestational loss
The Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Febrasgo) is highlighting the critical need for mental health support following gestational loss. In Brazil, involuntary pregnancy termination before the 20th week affects between 15% and 20% of pregnancies.
Medical experts, including obstetrician Romulo Negrini, emphasize that such losses are traumatic events that can trigger deep sadness, anxiety, guilt, and sleep disturbances. While intense emotional reactions are considered normal human responses to trauma, prolonged symptoms lasting over a month may indicate pathological grief or postpartum depression, requiring professional intervention.
During the ‘Setembro Amarelo’ suicide prevention campaign, specialists are calling for more humanized care in both public and private health sectors to combat the stigma and social neglect often experienced by women. Support services in Brazil include Basic Health Units, Psychosocial Care Centers (Caps), and the Centro de Valorização da Vida (CVV) via the 188 helpline.
