Indonesia corruption probes: Tax bribery and Customs intimidation
Indonesia's Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has named two tax officers, identified as BP and SR, as suspects in a corruption case involving Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk. The officials are accused of accepting bribes to facilitate under-invoicing of pulp exports between 2008 and 2025. By allegedly using lower-value harmonized system codes for products like dissolving pulp, the company reportedly reduced its tax obligations, resulting in estimated state losses of approximately 2 trillion rupiah ($112 million).
Separately, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating a corruption case within the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. The KPK has named six suspects following a sting operation and has expressed concern over alleged intimidation of witnesses during the investigation. The probe has also expanded to include the potential use of Wisma Atlet units in connection with the Customs case.
