Fecal microbiota capsules show promise for treating chronic insomnia
A randomized, double‑blind, placebo‑controlled trial conducted by researchers at Peking University tested capsules containing fecal microbes from healthy sleepers on participants with chronic insomnia. After a short course of antibiotics, 40 participants received the microbiota capsules while another 40 received placebo capsules. One month later, polysomnography showed that the treatment group had significantly higher sleep efficiency and reduced wake‑after‑sleep‑onset compared with the control group. Follow‑up questionnaires indicated that sleep quality improvements persisted for two to six months. The study’s authors concluded, “Our findings provide clinical evidence that targeting the gut microbiota may offer a promising new therapeutic strategy for chronic insomnia disorder,” and added that the work “strengthens our understanding of the gut–brain axis as an important regulator of human sleep.” The results suggest a potential new approach to managing insomnia through gut microbiome modulation.
