Gianni Infantino faces potential removal as FIFA president
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing significant institutional challenges that could threaten his leadership. Major continental confederations, including UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC, have formed an opposition bloc against his administration. Some confederations are reportedly studying a motion of no confidence, a process similar to impeachment, which would require an extraordinary congress called by at least 20% of FIFA's 211 member associations.
The crisis stems from several factors, including the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project regarding the sale of World Cup commercial rights and disputes over term limits. Human rights organization FairSquare has called for Infantino to be declared ineligible for the 2027 elections, arguing he has already exhausted the three-term limit. FIFA, however, maintains that his initial period following Sepp Blatter's resignation does not count as a full term.
In an effort to maintain support, Infantino is expected to visit the Dominican Republic to engage with Caribbean football federations. While some leaders, such as the president of the Congolese Football Federation, have expressed personal support for Infantino despite criticizing the FFE project, the pressure from major regional bodies continues to mount.
