Federal actions impact election officials ahead of midterms

Two weeks before the midterm elections, federal actions involving the Justice Department and law enforcement are creating tension with state and local election officials. The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against California, alleging the state is mailing ballots to more than 20,000 individuals who are likely noncitizens. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber has challenged the accuracy of this data, stating the federal government is threatening voting rights without providing specific evidence.

In Georgia, reports indicate that armed federal agents executed a search warrant at a local election facility in Fulton County, seizing over 600 boxes of election records and materials related to the 2020 election. Local officials described the scene as resembling a criminal raid. Following the seizure, the materials were transported away by trucks after the arrival of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, leaving local officials uncertain of the records' current location.

Utah Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson noted that while election officials have historically faced external threats such as cyberattacks, they are now facing unprecedented pressure from within the federal government.
