United States federal authorities charge multiple non-citizens with illegal voting

Federal prosecutors and the Department of Homeland Security have announced several charges against non-citizens for allegedly voting in U.S. elections. In Pennsylvania, nine residents face charges for illegal voting in state general elections. Among them is Artur Kopacz, a Polish citizen accused of voting in both the 2022 and 2024 elections. Other charged individuals include citizens of Cuba, Israel, Kenya, Russia, Greece, and the Netherlands.

In New York, 66-year-old Marva Cook has been charged with voting by an alien following her participation in the 2022 midterms. Cook, a Syracuse resident, stated she believed she was a U.S. citizen until recently discovering a German birth certificate while searching for her biological mother. Prosecutors note she has held a green card for several years.

In California, federal authorities are targeting suspected illegal voter registration. José Antonio Bañuelos-Díaz, a legal permanent resident, faces charges for allegedly improperly claiming citizenship during a 2007 voter registration. Additionally, the Department of Justice is pursuing a lawsuit in Los Angeles to purge at least 20,000 suspected non-citizens from California’s voter rolls.

In North Carolina, the Department of Homeland Security reported the arrest of 10 non-citizens for illegal voting in multiple elections. These enforcement actions are part of a broader federal initiative ahead of the midterm elections.
