Federal Constitutional Court marks 75th anniversary in Germany

The German Federal Constitutional Court is marking its 75th anniversary, an occasion met with both celebration and political scrutiny. Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) honored the institution, describing it as a ‘bulwark of freedom and democracy’ that has shaped the Republic. She emphasized that the court’s rulings on issues such as climate protection, education, and self-determination are vital, while warning that democracy requires active civic engagement beyond the work of the 16 judges.

In contrast, political figures have raised concerns regarding the court’s role and composition. The AfD has called for reforms, criticizing the political appointment process and suggesting that the court’s impartiality was shaken during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the court faces ongoing legal challenges, including an upcoming hearing in November regarding a lawsuit by former AfD lawmaker Jan Wenzel Schmidt, who is contesting his expulsion from the parliamentary group.

A formal ceremony is scheduled for Monday in Karlsruhe, with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz expected to attend.
