Federal Constitutional Court reviews Adiala inmates' medical pleas

The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has issued notices to the Attorney General for Pakistan regarding appeals from three Adiala jail inmates. The prisoners are seeking permission to receive medical treatment at private hospitals, similar to the facilities granted to PTI founder Imran Khan. The petitioners argue that denying them such access constitutes discriminatory treatment and violates Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law.

The FCC bench, led by Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan, is reviewing the matter after the Islamabad High Court previously dismissed the inmates' petitions. During the hearing, justices questioned the necessity of private hospital transfers over public options like the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and raised concerns regarding the implementation of the jail manual. The court has adjourned the hearing until Tuesday.

In a separate address marking the start of the new judicial year, Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan emphasized that constitutional supremacy and non-discriminatory justice must remain priorities. He noted that the FCC, established following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, is committed to upholding the constitutional order and ensuring that all exercises of public authority remain within legal boundaries.
