Federal District police dismantle prison‑run love‑scam and illegal abortion‑drug network
The Civil Police of Brazil's Federal District carried out two separate operations. On March 1, officers arrested a group of prisoners from Pernambuco who operated a “love‑scam” extortion scheme through dating‑app profiles. Victims were threatened with gang retaliation and forced to transfer money to accounts controlled by the criminals, with the proceeds laundered by accomplices outside the prison.
On March 2, a couple was detained for selling illegal abortifacient medication via more than a dozen fake social‑media profiles. The drug sales, conducted for three years across Brazil, involved the distribution of approximately 600 pills, R$60,000 in cash, two luxury cars and several mobile phones. The woman, a public‑hospital nurse, faces up to 15 years in prison for crimes against public health.
