Distrito Federal taxi drivers authorized to use BRT Sul corridor
Taxi drivers in the Distrito Federal have been granted authorization to use the BRT Sul exclusive corridor for a 90-day experimental period, starting August 20 and running until November 20, 2026. The measure, implemented by the Department of Roads (DER), covers the entire stretch of the corridor through the regions of Santa Maria, Gama, and Park Way.
The trial aims to assess the technical and operational impact of allowing taxis to share the lane with public transit buses. Experts will monitor several factors, including road safety, bus travel times, line regularity, corridor fluidity, and fuel consumption. The results of this study will determine whether the authorization becomes a permanent fixture.
Strict regulations apply to taxi drivers during this period. Taxis carrying passengers may use the corridor at any time. However, taxis without passengers are only permitted to use the lane during nighttime and early morning hours, specifically from 22:00 to 05:00.
To maintain traffic flow, the corridor must be used strictly as an express lane. Drivers are prohibited from stopping, boarding, or disembarking passengers within the corridor or at BRT stations and terminals. The maximum speed is set at 60 km/h, which reduces to 30 km/h when approaching stations. Overtaking is only allowed in designated station pull-out areas at a maximum of 30 km/h.
