Federal grant cancellations impact community services and research
Since the beginning of the second Trump administration, $113 billion in federal grants and assistance have been canceled. These funds, which were previously allocated, supported a wide range of community organizations, researchers, and local services.
Specific impacts include increased waiting times at homeless shelters in New Mexico due to funding and personnel cuts at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. In the scientific sector, cuts to National Institutes of Health grants have affected Alzheimer’s disease research in Massachusetts and endometriosis studies in Ohio. Additionally, a $5.6 million Department of Education grant intended for student mental health care in Illinois was terminated.
The administration of these funds has also been affected by departures within the federal workforce, impacting the processing and support of remaining grants.
