Judge Alvin Hellerstein dies at 92, reassigning Maduro case

Federal Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, a senior jurist for the Southern District of New York, died on Wednesday at age 92. Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998, Hellerstein presided over high-profile litigation, including civil lawsuits related to the September 11 attacks and legal proceedings involving Donald Trump.

His death necessitates the reassignment of the criminal case against former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The case involves charges of narcoterrorism, cocaine importation, and torture. Following the court's reassignment mechanism, the case has been transferred to Judge Analisa Torres.

Judge Torres issued her first order regarding the matter, decreeing that all previously established deadlines, hearings, and the trial date—currently scheduled for June 2027—will remain in effect to ensure judicial continuity. Maduro and Flores, who were captured in January 2026, have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
