Federal judge blocks DHS from accessing 17 million CDL records

Commercial Driver’s License Freedom Haulers initiative DHS subpoena truck driver licensing administrative stay

A federal judge has issued an administrative stay blocking the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from obtaining 17 million Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) records. US District Judge Anthony Trenga ordered the DHS to immediately return any subpoenaed documents and prohibited the agency from inspecting the records while he considers a motion to quash the subpoenas.

The legal challenge follows lawsuits filed by 21 Democratic state attorneys general and the District of Columbia against the DHS, the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The subpoenas are part of the Trump administration’s “Freedom Haulers” initiative, a program designed to crack down on undocumented truck drivers and expand licensing opportunities for American veterans. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated the multi-agency effort aims to bolster the trucking industry and improve road safety.
