Federal judge blocks relocation of FBI headquarters from Greenbelt

A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from canceling plans to relocate the FBI headquarters to Greenbelt, Maryland. District Court Judge Theodore Chuang ruled that the administration's attempt to redirect the project to a building in Washington, D.C., violated the Administrative Procedure Act and would cause “irreparable injury” to Maryland and Prince George’s County.

Local and state leaders, including Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown and various Democratic congressional members, celebrated the decision as a victory for the rule of law and the integrity of the competitive selection process. Officials noted that the Greenbelt site was chosen based on its merits, including security and cost-effectiveness, and emphasized its proximity to the Metro and major highways.

While city leaders view the project as a significant economic boon for the region, the FBI has criticized the ruling, describing it as politically motivated and arguing that the administration is seeking a more cost-effective headquarters solution.
