Federal judge blocks Trump administration order restricting mail voting FAST-MOVING
A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. Postal Service from implementing an executive order from the Trump administration that sought to restrict mail voting. The order aimed to create a federal voter list and involve the Postal Service in election operations in a manner that critics argue would limit access to mail-in ballots.
U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani ruled that “the executive branch has no authority to regulate elections.” The ruling comes as the 2026 midterm elections are less than 90 days away, with the court noting the critical need to prevent changes to election rules on the eve of the vote. The decision follows a previous ruling in June where the court found key parts of the order unconstitutional.
The Trump administration has requested that the U.S. Supreme Court halt these lower court decisions. Voting rights groups, including the League of Women Voters and the ACLU, supported the injunction, arguing the order causes irreparable harm and creates confusion for millions of voters who rely on mail ballots.
