Federal judge halts sale of Titanic shipwreck artifacts

A federal judge in Virginia has blocked R. M. S. Titanic Inc. from auctioning approximately 100 artifacts salvaged from the Titanic shipwreck. U.S. District Court Judge Rebecca Beach Smith upheld a 2011 ban, ruling that the sale of individual items could jeopardize the historical integrity and collective significance of the entire collection.

The artifacts, which were recovered during an 1887 expedition, include items such as a bronze cherub, a gold nugget necklace, a heart-shaped pendant, and passenger jewelry. While the company has held exclusive salvage rights since 1994 and has recovered roughly 5,500 items in total, the judge affirmed her jurisdiction to ensure the collection remains intact.

The ruling follows opposition from the French government, the United States government, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), among other groups who argue the relics should be preserved as a unified cultural heritage rather than sold as commercial assets.
