Federal judge orders unsealing of Jeffrey Epstein case documents

A federal judge has ordered the unsealing of a voluminous trove of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. The decision by Manhattan Federal Court Judge Loretta Preska involves files stemming from a 2015 defamation lawsuit filed by Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre against Ghislaine Maxwell.

The documents include evidence pertaining to an alleged underage sex trafficking operation operated by Epstein and Maxwell. The unsealing follows a long legal battle to overturn a blanket protective order previously issued by a former judge, which had kept the materials private due to their sensitive nature.

This development follows the U.S. Department of Justice's release of millions of case documents in January 2026. The exposure of Epstein’s network has prompted discussions regarding societal complicity and the tendency of powerful figures to claim ignorance of his activities despite his 2008 plea agreement involving underage prostitution charges.
