Federal Police arrest two candidates in Roraima

The Brazilian Federal Police have arrested two political candidates in Roraima as part of separate investigations into electoral crimes and financial irregularities.

Daniel Trindade, a candidate for federal deputy affiliated with the Liberal Party (PL), was arrested in Boa Vista during Operation Cunhambebe. The investigation examines his alleged involvement in forming a private militia and other crimes, including suspected vote-buying. The operation follows an incident in May where federal agents were attacked during an anti-illegal mining action in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Territory. Trindade is also being investigated for obstructing environmental inspections.

Separately, state deputy candidate Jalser Renier was arrested during Operation Filargíria. Authorities seized R$ 19,000 in cash and campaign spreadsheets from his office, raising suspicions of money laundering and electoral crimes. Renier’s defense maintains that the funds are of legitimate personal origin and that the seized documents pertain to standard campaign financial organization.
