Federal Police launch Operation Polaridade against firearm registration fraud
The Brazilian Federal Police launched Operation Polaridade to dismantle a scheme involving fraudulent firearm registrations for collectors, sport shooters, and hunters (CACs). The operation targeted administrative fraud within the Weapons Nucleus, specifically focusing on inconsistencies identified by the Federal Police in Niterói.
Investigations revealed that a third-party contractor allegedly approved firearm acquisition requests without mandatory documentation or by using falsified documents, such as forged proof of residence and duplicate identification. The scheme facilitated the illegal acquisition of heavy weaponry, some of which was later recovered in separate police actions.
During the operation, authorities executed 20 arrest warrants and 26 search and seizure warrants across various cities in Rio de Janeiro and Vila Velha, Espírito Santo. Eleven individuals were arrested in the act, and an arsenal including rifles and pistols was seized. Suspects face multiple charges, including criminal organization, corruption, falsification of public data, and illegal arms trafficking.
