Federal Prosecutor sues Cuiabá and Iphan over historic building decay

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has filed a civil public action against the municipality of Cuiabá and the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) to ensure the restoration and conservation of six landmark buildings in Cuiabá’s historic center.

Investigations revealed that several restoration projects, some funded by the federal PAC Cities Program, remain unfinished or paralyzed, leading to deterioration that threatens the city’s cultural heritage. The MPF is requesting that the Federal Court mandate both the municipality and Iphan to present restoration projects and execution schedules within 90 days.

The affected properties include the Casarão Irmã Dulce, the Casa do Patrimônio, and the Casarão da Funai, among others located on Rua Pedro Celestino. The legal action follows an investigation prompted by the Muxirum Cuiabano Culture Association.
